The UC on the new SAT

In March 2016, the College Board is rolling out the new SAT exam. After careful review, University of California faculty have decided to accept both the old and new SAT exam scores from students graduating high school before 2020. Here is some important information for you and your students:

  • All students currently in ninth through twelfth grades (prospective applicants to UC through fall 2019) have the option to submit scores from both the old or new SAT exam.

  • For students currently in eighth grade and below (students graduating 2020 and later), UC will only accept the new SAT exam.

  • The new SAT examination has an optional essay portion. UC requires all applicants to complete the essay portion of the new SAT.

  • The last offering of the old SAT exam was January 2016. If a student graduating before 2020 has not taken the old SAT exam yet, they can no longer do so. The College Board is no longer offering that old version of the exam.

Remember, students may also submit ACT with Writing scores in place of or in addition to SAT scores.
