March 22nd, 2014 Preview Day at Quest University Canada
Elite Athlete Program
In November, Quest partnered with One Ocean Expeditions to provide a unique educational experience for 11 Quest students. During this block, students spent one week in class on campus and roughly two weeks in the field in Antarctica, exploring the human relationship with the continent through science, history, and first-hand experience. Click here to read some of their blog posts.
While their peers were exploring Antarctica, students in the Science Film course produced nearly one video per day for the 18 days of the block. Their final project assignment was a 6-10 minute informative video. Here is one example from the pool of great final projects:
Watch "Weak at the Knees" by Jordan Ross and Jose Colorado
"Weak at the Knees" delivers an intimate look into the life of former University of Western Washington basketball star, Shedrick Nelson III, as he rehabilitates after ACL reconstructive surgery. Nelson had his full NCAA division II scholarship taken away following his team's national championship season. With his six-year-old daughter, Mia, back home and constantly in mind, we follow Nelson as he tries to recapture his former abilities for one last shot at a professional contract.
Quest was happy to host TEDxSquamish this November. The event was sold out, but students and other visitors were able to watch a live stream of the talks in the cafeteria. The theme of the event was "radical change." Quest's Chief Academic Officer Ryan Derby-Talbot was one of the last speakers of the afternoon. Ryan spoke about how the current approach to education focuses on "third-person" experiences, where students "learn" how to do something by imitating another, rather than first-person learning experiences, where students work through problems which they have not first seen demonstrated. Ryan argues that first-person learning experiences empower students to take on life's big challenges, and illustrated how this radical shift in approach to education is happening at Quest University Canada.
